Building permit totals for the first four months of 2012 in Lethbridge hit $54.5 million, up almost 49 per cent from 2011.
The increase was most noticeable in the industrial and institutional building categories, but the number of permits was also up for new single-family homes, from 108 in the first four months of 2011 to 149 in 2012.
