A $45-million sports complex is slated to begin construction soon in south Burnaby.
The 90,000-square-foot South Burnaby Arena is being built at 789 18th St., next to Byrne Creek Community School and near Edmonds SkyTrain Station.
The new facility impressively features not one, but two full sized hockey rinks, with space for up to 300 spectators for each rink. In addtion, the building will include meeting room space and area for floor sports.
The complex will feature a roof with north-facing glazed windows, according to architects HCMA Architecture + Design.
The project is funded through The City of Burnaby’s Community Benefit’s Bonus. Construction is expected to begin in mid-June, to be completed within the next two years.
The site of the facility is immediately adjacent to Ledingham McAllister’s future Southgate City development, to be built on the 51-acre site of the now-defunct Safeway distribution centre and dairy plant. The Southgate development will add 20 condo towers to the Edmonds area.
