The City of Delta has completed 561 net new units of housing in the past year, exceeding the target of 514 set by the provincial government in October 2023.

Delta’s progress on housing between Oct. 1, 2023, and Sept. 30, 2024, is outlined in a report to be received by council at its meeting Monday night, which summarizes the targets set by the province and highlights the actions Delta has taken to reach them—including streamlining development processes, reducing red tape, and updating Delta’s Official Community Plan.

“I am incredibly proud of Delta’s commitment to building more housing for our growing population, and I commend staff for the work that has gone into reaching this milestone,” said Mayor George Harvie in a news release. “We know that housing is a critical issue across our region, and Delta is doing everything possible to address the housing crisis in our own unique context. I look forward to continuing this vital work as we set out to build the diverse housing options that our community needs.”

In addition to reporting on the number of units achieved, the staff report also features discussion on the hundreds of units in the development approvals pipeline, the market conditions like high interest rates and rising constructions costs that are slowing down housing construction, and the measures Delta has taken to support the Housing Target Order. These actions include permitting small-scale multi-unit housing on all single-detached and duplex lots to increase housing diversity in the city. The housing units delivered in Delta in the past year include apartments, townhomes, single-detached, below-market rentals and more.

If approved by council, Delta’s Housing Target Progress Report will be sent to the Housing Targets Branch for review. The Progress Report will also be posted on Delta.ca for public access.
